Safety Products

Safety Products. Laboratory safety products, differentiated from safety equipment, refers to small devices, accessories, or clothing used to ensure personal safety in the work area. Items such as safety glasses, gloves, smocks, steel-toed shoes, first-aid kits, hair nets, hard hats, ear plugs, etc.

Sampling Systems

Sampling Systems: These systems and devices enable non-contact, closed-loop sampling of liquids, gases, and liquefied gases by installing a sampling device directly into the pipeline. This eliminates the problems encountered when sampling directly from the process: risk of exposure to the operator, contamination of the environment. The sampling system removes a sample from the line, places it in a vial or container, and evaluates it. Once the sampling is complete, the vial or container is purged of the sample, usually with a carrier gas. Sampling systems are designed to operate in both batch and continuous modes.

Sand

Sand Filters. There are two types of sand filters: sand filters and sand separators. The sand filter uses relatively coarse sand and other granular media to remove particles and impurities. The sand separators use centrifugal force to separate particles out of the water. The separated material drops into a reservoir where it can be removed. They are not true filters, since no physical barrier separates out the particles, but they are often used upstream of a filter to remove the bulk of the contaminant, where the filter does the final cleaning.

Sanitary

Sanitary Centrifugal Pumps. The characteristic that differentiates sanitary pumps from other centrifugal pumps is that they require extreme levels of cleanliness. They require special construction materials and have stringent cleaning requirements. Costly corrosion-resistant materials and special finishes are required for product contact areas, which must be cleanable and smoothly polished. Quick-change fasteners, flanges, and gaskets are used to simplify disassembly for cleanup. Components must be rugged to withstand repeated disassembly for the cleanup procedure.

Sanitary

Sanitary Positive Displacement Pumps. The characteristic that differentiates sanitary pumps from other positive displacement pumps is that they require extreme levels of cleanliness. They require special construction materials and have stringent cleaning requirements. Costly corrosion-resistant materials and special finishes are required for product contact areas, which must be cleanable and smoothly polished. Quick-change fasteners, flanges, and gaskets are used to simplify disassembly for cleanup. Components must be rugged to withstand repeated disassembly for the cleanup procedure

Sanitary

Sanitary Piping: This piping must be non-corrosive and non-reactive with the liquid or materials being transported. Although material selection is important to the design of sanitary piping (glass and stainless steel are commonly used), manufacturing quality is critical. Sanitary piping requires smooth inside surfaces and joint junctions to minimize collection of material on inside surfaces.

Sanitary Shell & Tube

Sanitary Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers. These heat exchangers are identical in operation to standard shell and tube exchangers. The differences are found in the elements of design such as the selection of materials, usually stainless steel or other high-allow material; the use of highly polished surfaces to minimize product buildup; and the implementation of design features that allow free-draining and easy cleaning.

Sanitizing Autoclaves

Sanitizing Autoclave: An autoclave is a device that uses steam to sterilize materials by inactivating all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. Sanitizing autoclaves are found in many medical settings and other places that need to ensure the sterility of objects and surgical tools such as forceps, needle holders, and scalpels.

Screens

Screen Filters. A type of filter that uses a rigid or flexible screen to separate sand or other fine particles out of water. These filters are not recommended for filtering organic matter since these organic contaminants can be extruded through the filter if pressure drop is considerable. Screen materials include stainless steel, polypropylene, and nylon. Similar devices with larger openings designed to keep out large objects are called strainers.

Scrubbers

General Environmental Scrubbers. Scrubber systems are air pollution control devices that are used to remove particulates and gases from industrial exhaust streams. Scrubbers are classified as either wet or dry. Wet scrubbers use a liquid to scrub unwanted pollutants from a gas stream. Dry scrubbers inject a dry reagent or slurry into a dirty exhaust stream to scrub out acid gases. If there is no useful purpose for the scrubbed out solid waste, it is usually contained or buried to prevent environmental contamination

Sealless

Sealless Mixers. These mixers are designed to protect the mixer from corrosive, toxic, noxious, radio-active, and carcinogenic liquids, or to protect the media being mixed from contamination by the mixer drive and shaft penetration of the container. The mixer drive and the internal container are isolated from each other. Magnetic drives act as a link between the drive and the agitating mechanism.

Shell & Tube

Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers. These heat exchangers are fabricated using two sets of tubes. One set contains the fluid that must be either heated or cooled. The second set contains the fluid that runs over the tubes that are being heated or cooled and provides the heat or absorbs the heat required. A set of tubes is called a tube bundle, and can be made up of several types of tubes: plain, longitudinally finned, etc. Shell and Tube heat exchangers are robust due to their shape, and are typically used for high pressure applications.

Sightglass Indicator

Sight Glass Level Indicator. Generally, a transparent tube through which an operator can observe the level of liquid contained in a tank. Simple sight glasses consist of a plastic or glass tube connected to the bottom of the tank at one end and to the top of the tank at the other. The level of liquid in the sight glass will be the same as that in the tank. Sight glasses intended for use in more demanding environments may have wire reinforced glass tubes, or metal tubes with a narrow reinforced glass window.

Sightglass/Tank Light

Vessel Specialties: Sightglass/Tank Light. A sightglass is a small window providing visual access to the inside of a process vessel. They are fabricated using durable glass that is securely fixed into a metal mounting frame. Tank lights, usually LED devices, are long-life lighting devices that illuminate the inside of a process vessel for inspection. Some units are available with integrated windows, eliminating the need for a separate sightglass at the installation site.

Skids/Fab Shops

Equipment: Skids and Fab Shops. Skids, also called pallets, are flat transport structures that support goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift truck, a pallet jack, or other jacking device. A pallet is the foundation of a unit load design, which can be as simple as placing the goods on a pallet, and securing them with straps or stretch-wrapped plastic film. Fab Shops, fabrication shops, are fixed or portable facilities stocked with equipment and supplies required to maintain, repair, duplicate, or create components required for systems operation. The equipment stocked depends upon the process being serviced.
